DATTATREYA MANDAL: Deltascenarios Rijnmond-Drechtsteden A mix of city, river and landscape The Low Countries of Europe had always been known for their rapid industrialization and urban populace. In relation to this, an expanse vaguely stretching from Amsterdam to Brussels is envisaged as a vast urban conglomeration consisting of heavy industries and patches of agriculture. Collectively known as the Rijnmond-Drechtsteden, the low-lying area is also threatened by adjacent sea levels as well as river discharges and salt water intrusion. As a solution to such predicaments, the Delta Committee (set up in 2008) has come up with some definitive project considerations. Thus an enhanced level of flexibility governs the building and zoning criteria followed by the developers. In relation to this, the mega-urban conglomeration will feature accessibility (for users and visitors) as its main spatial attribute. There will be circulation nodes at regular intervals that would act as the connecting points for the transit system. The holistic transit system will incorporate large scale public transportation facilities and also provide access to different recreational zones within the ‘city’. Such zones include the harbor and river fronts as public facilities. Finally, coming to spatial-user distribution zones, there will not be any partition regarding functions. In other words, there will not be any separation of work, recreation and residential zones.
